Vancouver College is a catholic independent school for boys with classes from kindergarten to grade 12. Designed to incorporate innovative, state-of-the-art learning settings, the Vancouver College Redevelopment project includes the addition of a new 3-storey middle school with extensive informal learning spaces, learning commons and dining hall; along with a new 2-storey elementary school featuring classrooms, a sanctuary, gymnasium, offices meeting rooms and a residential area for the Christian Brothers. The project has been designed to achieve LEED Gold certification.
Glotman•Simpson carried out a full structural building condition assessment and seismic retrofit study for the Vancouver College campus. At the time of inspection, Vancouver College was made up of a number of building “blocks” comprising a series of independent, or interconnected building structures of differing vintages. Findings showed that several buildings did not meet seismic standards and therefore a redevelopment plan was put in place which would see the main building undergo a seismic upgrade and the addition of two new school buildings on the same site.
Following a full structural building condition assessment and seismic retrofit study for the Vancouver College campus, findings showed that several buildings did not meet seismic standards and therefore required upgrading. At the time of inspection, Vancouver College was made up of a number of building “blocks” comprising a series of independent, or interconnected building structures of differing vintages. The redevelopment saw the addition of two new buildings, a 2-storey elementary school and a 3-storey middle school, and a seismic upgrade was carried out to the main building with the retention of the 1924 façade.
