The replacement of the New Westminster Secondary School consists of approximately 215,000 SF over 3-storeys. The new school accommodates 1,900 grade 9 to 12 students and provides a state-of-the-art learning environment complete with 56 classrooms, a 5,500 SF Grand Commons foyer and a 280-seat Performing Arts Theatre. New Westminster Secondary School has minimal environmental impact and was built to meet LEED Gold standards, featuring wood ceilings, timbers, paneling, and other quality wood features throughout.
Multi-purpose areas throughout the school are designed with wood finishes, including wood slat ceilings. The school’s design also incorporates structural timber, including glulam beams for the exterior and timber finishes throughout the interior, in accordance with BC’s Wood First Act. A modular wood slat ceiling runs from the foyer through the grand commons and along the main promenade corridor, providing ease of access to mechanical and electrical services while enhancing the building’s aesthetic and functional qualities.
