Jim Pattison Outpatient Care & Surgery Centre

Surrey B.C. ● Health Care

The first of its kind in BC, the $237 million Jim Pattison Outpatient Care & Surgery Centre officially opened June 2011, providing a full range of scheduled outpatient services including an enhanced family service health care clinic, day surgery, diagnostic imaging, express testing, medical clinic and rehabilitation. The Centre features more than 100 examination and treatment rooms, 10 procedural rooms, and six operating rooms. This 345,000 square foot modular structure consists of 4.5 stories above ground with 3.5 levels of underground parking, and the added capability for 30 percent future expansion.

Designed to create a welcoming and healing atmosphere through the use of natural light, easy way-finding, and the calming visual beauty of the surrounding Green Timbers heritage forest, the facility’s open floor plan called for clear spans with very few columns. GlotmanSimpson solved this challenge with a column grid of 9 x 9 metres, with all shear walls – the seismic elements – located on the perimeter. Extensive use of concrete helped meet the high floor loads and minimize vibration that could affect sensitive medical equipment. 200 tons of structural steel and 17,000 cubic metres of concrete were used in the construction of the facility.

This public private partnership (P3) project is designed to meet BC Ministry of Health’s new greenfield standards, and is LEED Gold certified.
