Burnaby Hospital Redevelopment – Phase 1

Vancouver B.C. ● Health Care

The Burnaby Hospital Phase 1 redevelopment focuses on transforming the facility into a modern healthcare center while addressing critical infrastructure needs. The project includes constructing the Keith and Betty Beedie Pavilion, a 6-storey tower with 83 single-patient rooms and dedicated units for mental health, maternity, and neonatal intensive care. Additionally, an underground parking facility is being built to improve accessibility.

Phase 1B expands and modernizes the Support Facilities Building, adding new operating rooms, an advanced energy center, and upgrading existing structures, all while maintaining uninterrupted hospital operations.

Glotman•Simpson played a vital role in this redevelopment by delivering innovative engineering solutions that addressed site-specific challenges, including proximity to the existing hospital, a constrained site layout and sloped terrain. We combined the Phase 1A and 1B designs into a single cohesive structure, reducing the need for expansion joints and addressed the seismic resilience of the existing Support Facilities Building by implementing targeted Fiber Reinforced Polymer upgrades. This improved the building’s ability to withstand earthquakes with minimal impact on hospital operations.
