Nature finds simple solutions for the most complex problems. Good structural engineering is the same. Marine Gateway in South Vancouver is a good example. This major multi-use development contains office and residential space, plus retail and a cinema complex. It was an enormous puzzle to be fitted in between two major transit hubs. The cinema complex had to cantilever over one of these, and there was extremely limited space for load transfer available. Choosing steel rather than traditional concrete in the cinema construction enabled us to reduce the load considerably. This allowed much of the weight to transfer onto one single, elegant column.
