Each year, more than 6,7000 Canadians – 800 British Columbians – are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, one of the most aggressive and difficult-to-detect forms of cancer. With a five-year survival rate of just 10%1, it is now the fourth-leading cause of cancer related death in Canada2. Without more effective treatment strategies, pancreatic cancer is projected to becoming the second-leading cause of cancer death by 20303.

“The outcomes have truly improved for the more than 800 people diagnosed with this disease each year. Pancreatic cancer still affects many, and while it’s heartbreaking to see new teams riding in memory of loved ones they’ve lost, this event has given them hope.” – Harrison Glotman

A Silent and Stubborn Disease

Pancreatic cancer rarely shows symptoms until it has reached advanced stages, at which point treatment options are limited, and outcomes are often devastating. The need for early detection, targeted treatment strategies, and research-driven innovation has never been greater.

Unlike other types of cancer, pancreatic cancer has very few survivors to be able to advocate for increased awareness and funding. This is why events like the Capilano Volkswagen Cypress Challenge matter.

Riding Toward a Better Future

Founded by Geoffrey and Myriam Glotman to bring attention to this underfunded and under-researched disease, the Cypress challenge supports the work of BC Cancer’s pancreatic cancer research team. Every rider, donor, and volunteer help contribute to the progress.

In 2024, the Cypress Challenge reached a historic milestone: $800,000 raised in a single year, bringing our all-time total to $5.2M for pancreatic cancer research. This support fuels:

  • Advances in genetic testing for hereditary pancreatic cancer
  • Exploration of personalized treatment pathways
  • A deeper understanding of how this disease progressed and how we can better detect it earlier

Be Part of the Momentum

On Sunday, July 27th, we ride again – in support of those individuals and families impacted by pancreatic cancer, and in pursuit of better outcomes through increased research. Join us for the Cypress Challenge and be a part of a community committed to hope, discovery, and change.
