Marine Gateway is a transit-oriented, mixed-use development located at a significant new transit node in south Vancouver. The project is located directly adjacent to a Canada Line SkyTrain station and the South Vancouver Bus Loop at Cambie and Marine; central to the project’s design is the accommodation of transit related functions. A neighbourhood plaza and pedestrian mews creates gathering spaces and concentrates pedestrian activity around the retail stores, while connecting SW Marine Drive and the residential neighbourhood to the north.
As structural engineers on the Marine Gateway project, Glotman•Simpson had to manage a multitude of requirements to create this community. Residential towers, a cinema, an office block, a large loading bay over a parkade, and a retail high street were integrated with the existing Canada Line Station and Bus Loop. The diversity of challenges inherent in such an extensive project required various structural solutions. The office block was transferred on post-tensioned beams 9’ deep x 12’ wide to maintain clear spans for the loading bay below. Construction of the cinema spanned over the Bus Loop, necessitating strict adherence to scheduled deadlines.
LEED Gold certified, Marine Gateway features geothermal heating and cooling with an ambient heat recovery energy loop, thermal mass and sun shading devices. Our success in delivering this project on time greatly adds to Vancouver’s development and populates a major transit hub.
